Welcome to Viikki Campus at the geographical centre of the City of Helsinki! Viikki is one of the four campuses of the University of Helsinki, which ranks in the top 1% of all universities in the world.

Viikki Campus is an international hub of life sciences, where cutting-edge research brings solutions to grand challenges of the world. Just under two thousand people work on the campus, and more than six thousand students are enrolled in the various departments.

Viikki is home to the University’s Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Institute of Biotechnology. The campus area is also shared by the Finnish Environment Institute, Natural Resources Institute Finland, and the Finnish Food Safety Authority, all of whom actively collaborate with the University. This network of experts strives for research-based innovations for the needs of education, businesses and society.

Viikki Campus hosts several institutes, research projects and multidisciplinary network organisations conducting critical work in the fields of sustainability, life sciences, the linked health of humans, animals and the environment, pharmaceutical research and the life and survival of different species in changing environmental circumstances.

The campus includes a veterinary teaching hospital, a top-level unit of veterinary care, and platform for clinical research. There is a research farm and an arboretum in the campus area. A 2,400 m2 greenhouse and a three-hectare research field are located in the centre of Viikki Campus.

Viikki Campus is surrounded by an internationally valued and legally protected network of natural habitats. In spring and autumn, migratory birds stop to rest in the fields, meadows, and shallows of the Vanhankaupunginlahti bay, which is one of Finland’s Natura areas.

The faculties of Viikki Campus have several research stations in Finland that provide long-term environmental background datasets, from the southern shores of the Baltic Sea to northern Finland. The research stations offer excellent facilities and support for research and teaching. The stations have modern infrastructures to support a wide variety of research, from field studies to laboratory analyses, covering research in biosciences, forestry, geography and zoology.
