Restoring a Mid Century Modern T.V. Chair Recliner from start to finish
A lockdown project that ended up being far bigger than intended!
I mostly made this video for my dad, who likes to watch restoration videos on YouTube. But maybe you’re here because you have a similar chair and want to revive it, if so, I hope seeing what I did with mine is in some way helpful.
I am by no means a professional upholsterer or furniture restorer, but when I saw this chair on Facebook marketplace with some dodgy upholstery I jumped (perhaps too quickly) at the chance to fix it up. However, once I got it home and properly inspected it, I realised the woodwork also needed to be completely reglued and refinished. Thus the project grew.
At the time I started researching there was very little information available about fixing this particular type of chair, which I found surprising given how popular they are. I managed to find one blog post (which skipped over the upholstery part) but no videos, so I thought I’d record my own process. I scoured through multiple eBay listings looking for detailed photos and descriptions, and in this way I found out how the spring mechanism at the bottom was supposed to look. What I wasn’t entirely sure of was the upholstery of the back cushion (the cover that it came with was not the original nor was it very functional so I couldn’t even use it as a pattern) so I invented my own Velcro solution which may or may not be close to correct. At the time I published this we were experiencing a second wave of Covid19 lockdown here in Melbourne (AUS), so I couldn’t even visit a furniture store to try and grab a sneaky look at another one!
Please note that I knew this chair wasn’t a particularly expensive or rare one for it’s genre, so I took some liberties with the stain colour. Do try to be mindful and respectful of the original craftmanship when restoring, however and wherever you can.
