Dunkerque was the lead ship of the Dunkerque-class battleships, built for the French Navy in the 1930s, alongside her sister ship Strasbourg. They were France’s first new capital ships after World War I, as earlier battleship programs had been canceled due to war and budget limits. Dunkerque was laid down in 1932, launched in 1935, and commissioned in 1937. She was armed with eight 330 mm guns in two quadruple turrets and could reach a speed of 29.5 knots, making her one of the fastest battleships of her time.
Before World War II, Dunkerque and Strasbourg served together in the 1st Line Division. During the early months of the war, Dunkerque hunted German commerce raiders and escorted convoys. After France signed the armistice in 1940, Dunkerque was severely damaged during the British attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir. She was later refloated and returned to Toulon for repairs.
In November 1942, to prevent capture by German forces, Dunkerque was scuttled during the German occupation of southern France. Her wreck was later partially dismantled by Italian and German forces. The remains stayed in Toulon until 1955, and the ship was finally scrapped in 1958.
