German Officers Dismissed The Americans — Then The Nisei 442nd Rescued The Lost Battalion

German forces defending the Vosges Mountains believed the dense forests, steep terrain, mines, and fortified positions would stop any American advance. But in October 1944, they faced the 442nd Regimental Combat Team—Japanese American soldiers whose determination would become legendary.

The “Lost Battalion,” part of the U.S. 36th Infantry Division, had been cut off and surrounded by German troops near Biffontaine, France. After other rescue efforts failed, the 442nd was ordered to break through. For days, its Nisei soldiers advanced through artillery fire, machine-gun positions, roadblocks, and heavily defended ridges.

Despite exhaustion and devastating casualties, the 100th, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions continued attacking. On October 30, patrols finally reached the trapped Americans and rescued 211 survivors. Some companies of the 442nd emerged from the fighting with only a small number of men unharmed.
