10. Thakane The Dragon Slayer
Disney princesses better move over because Thakane is ready to slay the dragon herself! Thakane was the daughter of a great chief of the Basotho people. Sadly, her father died and she became the one responsible for taking care of her two brothers who were lazy and vain.

9. Captain Van Hunks
The legend of Jan van Hunks is one of many stories about the mountains that overlook the city of Cape Town. Jan van Hunks was a retired 18th-century sea captain and avid tobacco smoker who lived on Table Mountain with his wife. Every morning, he traveled up to nearby Devil’s Peak and smoked his pipe while admiring the surrounding views.

8. The Watcher Of The South
The Legend of the Watcher of the South is the story of the creation of Tabletop Mountain. The world’s creator, Qamata, began forming land over the seas while making the planet. In doing so, he attracted the jealousy of Nganyamba, the Great Dragon of the Sea. To stop Qamata from completing his work, Nganyamba continuously battled him.

7. Ga-Gorib
The Ga-Gorib is an irritating, man-eating, demonic monster that originated in the mythology of the indigenous San/Saan tribe, also known as the Bushmen. This diabolical creature sits on the edge of a large pit and attempts to lure people in by taunting them with challenges to throw rocks at it.

6. The Ghost Of Tokai Manor
The historic Tokai Manor House is located in the Tokai Forest in Cape Town and was built in 1796. At the time, it was considered the Cape Peninsula’s most magnificent homestead. A man named Petrus Michiel Eksteen owned the Manor House during the early 1800s.

5. Mermaids Of The Karoo
Much of western South Africa is covered in a vast, semi-arid desert called the Karoo, which is divided into a large, dry northern section called the Groot Karoo, and a smaller southern region called the Klein Karoo. Many people have reported seeing mermaids brushing their hair along a mountainside pool in the Klein Karoo.

4. The Witch Of The Hex River Valley
In the Afrikaans language, the word “heks/hex” means “witch.” The Hex River Valley is situated in the Western Cape and is surrounded by mountains. The highest nearby peak is called Matroosberg. For decades, people have reported sightings of a beautiful young woman in a white nightgown who wanders along Matroosberg’s lower crags in the moonlight, wailing and wringing her hands.

3. Tokoloshe
Also called the Tikoloshe, De’Avion, or Hili, the Tokoloshe is an evil, dwarf-like water spirit of Zulu/Xhosa mythology. Ill-intending humans looking to cause problems for others call upon this mischievous entity for help. The Tokoloshe’s activities range from simply scaring their victims to causing illness.

The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship whose captain and crew will spend eternity unsuccessfully trying to navigate the vessel to port. Time and time again, the ship is blown back by storms, but its dedicated crew will never give up, despite their efforts being in vain.
