Prostatic acid phosphatase is an enzyme made by the prostate gland. It is found in small amounts in the blood, although Pap levels increase in cases of prostate cancer.

The Pap test is a blood test that specifically measures the level of prostatic acid phosphatase in the blood. Pap is also present in seminal fluids. Apart from this, testing the presence of this enzyme in vaginal swabs helps in investigating cases of rape (sexual assault).
Pap test is recommended by the doctor to detect advanced metastatic prostate cancer. Apart from this, it is also recommended for those people who are undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. This test is not recommended in the early stages of prostate disease because Pap levels do not increase in the early stages. Prostate disease is a silent disease and in some cases does not cause any symptoms in the early stages of the disease. However, if the cancer spreads to other organs or especially to the bones, the levels of Pap start increasing in the blood because in such conditions it is secreted in greater quantities. Some symptoms may appear in the last stages of prostate cancer. Your doctor may recommend a Pap test if you have any of the following symptoms:

frequent urination especially at night
difficulty urinating
Burning and pain during urination
Weak flow of urine that stops and starts frequently
blood in urine or semen
pain in lower back and legs
