Stricter UK Immigration Rules VEED

The UK government has introduced significant changes to its immigration policy by tightening English language requirements for immigrants. These reforms are part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s broader plan to reduce net migration and promote better integration of newcomers into British society. Under the new rules, immigrants applying for work, study, or residency must demonstrate a higher level of English proficiency. For example, the required level for Skilled Worker visas has been raised from B1 to B2 on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) scale.

In addition, the period required to obtain permanent residency—known as Indefinite Leave to Remain—has been extended from five years to ten years, although exceptions may be made for individuals who make significant contributions to the UK’s economy and society. For the first time, adult dependents of visa applicants will also need to meet a basic English requirement, starting at level A1, with expectations for improvement over time.

International students will face stricter rules regarding their ability to stay in the UK after completing their studies. The government argues that these measures will help ensure that immigrants are better prepared to communicate, work, and contribute to the country. However, critics warn that these changes might discourage skilled workers and students from choosing the UK, which could impact sectors that rely heavily on foreign talent.
