Águas de Março (Waters of March) - Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #19: Advanced Phrase 3333

Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #19: Advanced Bossa Nova Phrase 3333
in:
Águas de Março (Antonio Carlos Jobim)

This is based mainly on the first recording by Jobim and Elis Regina from legendary Elis and Tom album with guitar accompaniment played by Oscar Castro Neves. Some adjustments were also made in accordance with several Castro Neves' solo recordings as well as with João Gilberto's version.

This video also contains lyrics subtitled below the rhythm box. The lyrics are synchronized with the notes from the rhythmic phrases and placed in the timeline at the exact positions of the beats as they were sung by Jobim and Elis Regina. Lyrics subtitles support triplets and those are also placed at the correct positions.

The lesson shows the usage of advanced bossa nova phrase 3333. This rhythmic phrase may be constructed as a polyrhythmic composition of two simple rhythms, the first one performed on bass string playing all quarter notes on strong beats 1, 5, 9 and 13 and the second performed on high strings playing 8th notes on all offbeats (2, 4, 6,...).

Some things to note about guitar accompaniment:

1. All notes are played with staccato except the beat 4 in both measures that is played with legato. Muting of the strings is performed mainly with the right hand fingertips.

2. Original recording on Elis and Tom was played in Bb key, however on subsequent recordings Oscar Castro Neves played Águas de Março a semitone above (B). This slight change makes it possible to play open E string chords (Emaj7, E6) which is much easier to play on a guitar than Eb and for this reason we have chosen Castro Neves' voicing. Some chords were substituted in order to make the progressions easier: before B7/A (5th fret) we always play B6 (7th fret), while before F#m7 (2nd fret) we always play B6/9/F# (2nd fret).

3. The rhythmic phrases also include phrase 3113 used by João Gilberto in his recordings of Águas de Março. At the other hand Oscar Castro Neves used mainly rhythmic phrase from this lesson (3333). In this recording we used the combination of both phrases with the addition of the basic bossa nova phrase to make the accompaniment more interesting. Note that the rhythm of the melody contains a lot of triplets which can be seen in the timing of lyrics. Also note that the rhythm of "São as águas de março..." refrain is different in every subsequent repeat.

Enjoy playing Águas de Março!
