Arnold-Chiari 1 Malformation

Unlike the Chiari 2 malformation which is seen at birth, the Chiari 1 defect is a malformation occuring during development of the skull and brain. This usually involves a portion of the skull which is abnormally shaped causing pressure on the brain. This pressure can cause the cerebellar tonsils to herniate down through the foramen causing pressure on the adjacent brain stem. In some cases trauma, such as an auto collision, can increase the brain swelling thereby exacerbating the condition. A number of issues including headaches, dizziness, weakness and in severe cases, paralysis.
