Recreating Mayor of Kingstown With a $5K Drone (Using Dehancer Pro).
What happens when you try to recreate a gritty TV look… using just a drone?
When my friends at Dehancer offered me their software, I finally had the excuse I needed to test something I’ve been thinking about for a while—can a prosumer drone actually match the cinematic look of a major TV series?
Inspired by the moody, industrial visuals of Mayor of Kingstown, I set out across Hamilton, Ontario to recreate some of the show’s iconic aerial “connective tissue” shots—the kind that give the city its heavy, almost oppressive tone. The twist? Instead of a full cinema camera setup, I used a DJI Mavic 4 Pro shooting in D-Log.
After a few days of flying, I brought everything into DaVinci Resolve and started building a look using Dehancer Pro. In this video, I walk through my full process—from analyzing the show’s color palette to building a simple node tree, applying film profiles, dialing in grain, and shaping the final image.
I’m not a professional colourist—far from it—but this is a real-world look at how I approach grading and how tools like Dehancer can help bridge the gap between digital footage and a more cinematic feel.
If you’re into filmmaking, drones, or color grading, hopefully this gives you some ideas (or at least proves you don’t need a $100K camera to get something that feels close).
Let me know what you think—and if you’ve got tips, I’m all ears.
