S. Korean health authorities to secure more hospital beds for severely-ill patients

And the latest on the coronavirus situation in Korea.
The number of new cases is widely expected to keep rising for some time now that the distancing rules have been eased.
To prepare for that eventuality, the authorities have ordered more hospital beds to be secured for patients who are severely ill.

There's been a rise in severe cases of COVID-19 in recent days, so on Friday, the health authorities issued an administrative order that will secure more hospital beds in the greater Seoul area... in case new infections hit or even surpass 7-thousand a day.

"The government will prepare enough beds to handle the demand even if the daily caseload goes over 10-thousand."

Looking at hospital bed availability across the country,... as of Friday,... there were about 11-hundred beds for severely ill patients... of which a little under half were occupied.
For people with less serious symptoms, there were about 450 beds... occupied at a rate of almost 60 percent.
Under the new administrative order,... 22 large general hospitals in the greater Seoul area... will provide around 400 more hospital beds for patients with moderate symptoms.

For people with mild or no symptoms recovering at home... the authorities also stressed the need to ensure there are sufficient medical supplies and transportation for them.
On Friday... the number of people newly assigned to recover at home was 5-hundred-44.
As for schools, ahead of a return to in-person learning later this month, the authorities are urging administrators to make sure their schools are taking the proper precautions.

Nationwide on Friday, new cases of COVID-19 totaled 2-thousand 344.
The number of severe cases was 3-hundred 82,... an increase of 17 from the previous day.

There were 20 deaths were reported, bringing the total death toll to 2-thousand 936.
