Rare SMOKING PIPE Restoration - With AMAZING OUTCOME
Rare BROKEN smoking pipe restoration to the smallest detail. At the end I made a lid and a stand for the restored smoking tobacco pipe. Either you use a smoking pipe or not, definitely check out this incredible transformation.
About The Smoking Pipe
This is a RARE old smoking pipe found in a barn built 1875. I was fortunate to get hands on this wonderful piece of history and make it shiny again. It is hand made out of wood, silver, steel, rubber, fabric, copper and lead/tin. The smoking pipe is in terrible shape, worn, broken and missing lid on the chamber.
The Restoration Process
I started by breaking down the smoking pipe. It is not a big item but it took me a while to carefully remove all pieces best I could. To remove the silver lid ring and the silver shank, I had to heat it up with a blowtorch. On my treadle powered Dremel I easily removed dirt, old tobacco and later on sanded down the wooden parts. Also, I sanded by hand to 800 grit to get that smooth surface.
Next step, I cleaned silver parts with the Dremel and polished them afterwards. Since the lid was missing, I made one out of aluminium. I didn’t have any silver plates unfortunately.
To keep this wonderful smoking pipe displayed, I made a wooden stand to follow the curves and shape of the pipe itself. I used a similar wood as close as possible to the pipe, to get a feeling of complete set.
I put all parts together, mostly glued with two component epoxy glue and waxed the wood and polished the metal surfaces again.
