BMW E30 Front Subframe Reinforcement | How To Install Weld-In Plates | 003

Follow along with me in this video while I weld in E30 front subframe reinforcement plates and refurbish my E30 project’s front subframe.

The front subframe is another well known weak point on the E30. They are known to crack over time as the metal becomes fatigued. This can be especially a problem if you are doing an engine swap on your E30. The chances are you’re going to be adding a bit of power and putting an engine that wasn’t really designed to sit on that subframe under the bonnet.

All of this can lead to disaster. So while the subframe is out of the car, it's wise to give it a bit of TLC by cleaning it up and welding on some reinforcement plates to the vulnerable areas. A fresh lick of paint to protect it from rust and corrosion doesn’t go amiss either.
And this is exactly the process I undertake with the E30 subframe in this video.
You might notice that I opted to weld the engine mounting point plates to the engine-side face of the subframe. This is a more unusual way to do it, but as I am intending to do an M52 swap, it makes sense to do it this way rather than add in spacers to raise the engine at a later date.

M52 swaps in an E30 generally run the sump very low, which is why you see so many of them damaged, or at the very least battle-scarred and scraped up to heck.
