The Snow Spider (1988)

Siân Phillips stars in this atmospheric HTV Wales adaptation of Jenny Nimmo's award-winning children's fantasy story - the first part of The Magician's Trilogy.

Set in a remote part of the Welsh countryside in the late 1980s, Gwyn and his family remain haunted by the disappearance of his sister, Bethan, in a snow storm five years before.

On his ninth birthday, Gwyn's eccentric grandmother, Nain, gives him five unusual gifts - sparking off an adventure when she declares 'Time to find out if you're a magician!'

Gwyn sets off to discover if he has inherited the magic powers of his ancestors, leading to strange encounters with other worlds of snow and silver - and strangest of all, a small spider named Arianwen, weaving a silken web around a girl...who reminds Gwyn of someone.

Originally broadcast as a four-part series on the ITV network from 26th November - 17th December 1988, this is a feature-length version edited and released on video by HTV the following year.

Also starring Sharon Morgan and Robert Blythe - with Osian Roberts as Gwyn and Rosslyn Killick as Eirlys.
