How To Build a Retaining Wall Made of Tires
The DIY guide for a cheap landscaping idea that helps divert waste from the landfill: using recycled tires as a retaining wall in your backyard.
Materials List:
privacy pressure treated lattice
pressure treated fencing boards (cut in half)
old discarded tires - R15 radials
1/2" clear stone gravel for drainage and fill for behind the wall if you want to plant in it
perforated drain tile for superpowered drainage
wheelbarrow, gloves, shovel, drill, level, outdoor screws
Estimated project value = we did close to 50 feet long by 2 feet high of retaining wall along the edge of our property (including the flower seeds!) for under $200 in material

We are both passionate about sustinable buildings and attended the Earthship Academy together to learn how to build passive homes out of recycled material. We want to bring you all things Hopey and Changey to inspire you with the skills we have learned and by being brave enough to try out brand new things. Because there's no such thing as failing, just testing what works and what doesn't!
Come back to check out what the wall looks like at the end of the season once we've planted flowers behind it and see if the plants help cover up the tires and climb down the lattice like we want them to!
