Special Visit To The Incredible 16 to 1 Mine: Part 9 - Active Workings

Continuing our wonderful tour of the 16 to 1 Mine, we are taken to where the miners are presently focusing their efforts. Duane gives a detailed explanation of how they work and what they are doing at this particular area of the mine. He further explains the geology of the section they are working and how that, in theory, will lead them to the gold they are seeking.

Duane’s comment about “walking on the moon” really resonated with me... What you’re seeing in this video is something that fewer than a handful of people on this planet have ever seen before. Prior to this video, more people had walked on the moon than had seen the ground being revealed to the world for the first time here. This rock being uncovered has been locked underground for countless millions of years. I find it humbling to think of our short lifespans contrasted by the pace of geological time. Our passing is nothing to these rocks we have seen and walked by.

We make a few more connections to other features in this series on our way out of the 800 Level – such as the Sixteen to One Shaft – to try and tie up as many loose ends as possible. I know that some of these features were presented several videos back, but, hopefully, with the names being repeated and with them being seen from different points that it can make sense. Of course, there are also the maps seen in the prior videos to refer to. I wish we had maps like that for all of the mines we explored!

The next – and last – video in this series will cover our return to the Sixteen to One Mine the next day to cover the journey to the 49 Hoist, the 49 Hoist itself and a few other notable features. Fortunately, I was able to restore all of my video equipment to proper working order prior to my return the next day. So, Part 10 will feature smooth video and fully charged batteries.

Our guide on this tour, Duane, has a YouTube channel of his own in which he has posted videos he has taken in mines where he has worked. It can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxw6cK0-lOubg0XJa3ctSYQ

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.

These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.

So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!
