Amsterdam (1749): The Treasure Ship in the Sand

In 1749, the VOC ship Amsterdam set sail for Batavia, loaded with silver, weapons, and trade goods. But fierce storms, leaks, and disease crippled the ship. On January 26, it ran aground near Hastings, England. Hundreds survived—but the treasure sank beneath the waves. For centuries, the wreck was hidden under the sands. Then storms uncovered it again, and today, the outline of the Amsterdam can still be seen at low tide. Archaeologists have recovered coins, cannons, and pottery, but much of the cargo remains buried. The Amsterdam is not just a wreck—it’s a time capsule of the Dutch Golden Age, preserved beneath the English coast for nearly 300 years. #DutchHistory #VOC #Shipwreck #Amsterdam #MaritimeHistory #Netherlands
