The movie is based on Johnston McCulley's novel The Curse of Capistrano, which was first published in 1919 in five serialized chapters in All-plot Weekly and featured the masked hero Zorro. The plot takes place in early 19th-century Southern California. Grosset & Dunlap reprinted the novel under that title following the huge success of the silent 1920 film version. The Mark of Zorro received a nomination for Best Original Score at the Academy Awards.
