The Trainer #26: Using Voltage Drop To Find Key-off Battery Drains

(This is an excerpt of a more detailed video we will be sharing in March 2013. In the full version, we'll also show you how to measure using just your digital multimeter and/or using a low amp current probe.)

Today's cars use dozens of onboard controllers that can remain "on" even when the key is turned off. Using traditional methods of measuring battery drain (removing a battery cable and placing an ammeter in series, for example) can cause the offending module to reset and not present the problem for testing. This method uses a technique called "voltage drop testing" to look for current flow without opening any circuits or pulling any fuses. And by identifying quickly which circuit power feed is "alive", it also reduces the time needed to isolate the cause.
