In many ways, the U.S. was on the verge of slaying the plastics dragon before the coronavirus hit. Major legislation banning single-use plastic was close to being signed, both federally and locally.
But once the the virus became a pandemic, decades of hard work turning consumers away from single-use plastics went down the drain. For a tanking oil industry, the paranoia and lack of clear information around the virus was seen as a major lifeline — and plastic was the answer.
We take a look at the damage that is being done to the oceans – and whether that damage is reversible.
