2019 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid - Better than the Prius?

The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid features all the great fuel-economy perks of a Toyota Prius, but without the polarizing looks.

Hyundai sells three versions of the Ioniq: a hybrid, an all-electric, and a plug-in hybrid. Our test car was the former; a Ioniq Hybrid with SEL trim. The 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine pairs with a 32-kW electric motor for 139 horsepower—more than a Prius but less than what you’ll get from a Honda Insight. Notably, Hyundai’s decision to forgo a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and opt for a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) has resulted in a much more lively and enjoyable driver’s car.

The EPA rates the Ioniq Hybrid at 55 miles per gallon in combined driving. Our test car managed 53 mpg, which is very impressive considering the twisty mountain roads, where Chris tested it.

The front seats felt very comfortable, the rear’s a little more cramped, and cargo space is competitive, at 26.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard in the Ioniq, and the Limited trim receives three free years of Hyundai’s Blue Link Connected Care and Remote Package subscriptions.
