The path to up to 390wh/kg runs through SilLion, high-loaded silicon anodes, nickel-rich NMC cathodes, and Maxwell Technologies Dry Battery Electrode (DBE). Another potential path is to increase the cell diameter to 1.57 inches as suggested by Tesmanian, which would mean a 4070 battery cell.

The $100 per kilowatt figure is key for Tesla, as suggested by their Project Roadrunner. If they continue to drive the cost down, this will open the door to a $25,000 compact car which will be designed in China.
