Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez-Ferrada says she understands the pothole crisis from the driver’s sea

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez-Ferrada says she understands the pothole crisis from the driver’s seat after hitting two potholes on Notre-Dame Street, which left her with two flat tires and required replacing all four tires. In a social media video she posted Monday night, she joked with a towing operator but stressed she wasn’t laughing at residents’ difficulties and vowed to find solutions. She told CTV News that her insurer will cover the cost; she won’t seek taxpayer money, though residents may file claims. New city data underscored the severity: 4,200 pothole reports to 311 since Jan. 1, a pace equal to about a third of 2025’s total and half of 2023’s. Martinez-Ferrada attributed the surge to brutal cold and wildly fluctuating temperatures, and said equipment and capacity constraints are limiting the city’s responsiveness. Crews are prioritizing the most dangerous streets, with a spring strategy planned to address potholes more broadly.
