J. Paul Lyet speaks from the Sperry Research Center in Sudbury, Massachusetts, where work is being done on tomorrow's products. At 02:50 we see inside a Sperry Univac Laboratory near St. Paul, Minnesota, showing the creation of memory chips for computers. Today's chips are compared to the UNIVAC 1 computer of 1951, which had over 5,000 vacuum tubes.
The Sperry New Holland divisionís TR 70 Twin Rotor Combine 03:33, Sperry-built ship simulators at the National Maritime Research Center in Kingspoint, New York; in Clearwater, Florida (04:12).
At 04:29, an ocean fishing trawler is seen, and then a supertanker , which utilizes a Sperry computer collision avoidance system onboard, tracking position, speed and course of up to 45 ships at one time; radar scopes with sweeping scans are also seen. At 04:55 we see the NASA Space Shuttle ìEnterpriseî in flight, and then landing; Sperry Flight Systems Division provided the simulators used by pilots in training; narrator states flight and ground crew training is facilitated by Sperry computerized simulators in Texas. A man and a woman in are seen in a Sperry lab (clean room), with computer terminal and binocular microscope (05:28). At 05:47 we see testing of various Sperry New Holland farm equipment, including a Sperry grain windrower; a screen display of frequency generator test equipment is seen, along with an 8080 combine in Belgium, along with oscilloscope testing equipment in use. At 06:20, an elevated train system in Hamburg, Germany is run by a Sperry Univac computer controlled public transportation system. At 06:55, several close up views of women using Sperry UNISCOPE 200 data input terminals in the Otto Mailing House, a large automated mailing house in Hamburg, Germany. 300 UNISCOPE terminals are used with this Sperry computer system. At 07:14, we see a large mailing house in the United Kingdom using magnetic code imprinting technology and a Sperry post-code reader interpreter, sorter.
At 07:36, In France, one of the largest Sperry computer installations in Europe is an Air France Flight reservation system at Valbonne. Sperry terminals; a computer operator loads a magnetic tape drive; A Sperry model 1100 series large mainframe is shown (likely a Sperry Univac model 1100/40 or 1100/80). At 08:15, John F. Kennedy Airport, which used a large Sperry computer reservation system. Sperry-built hydraulic systems help control aircraft. At 08:55, clear liquids being poured in a chemical lab. At 09:09, large crane equipment loads Sperry equipment for transport by train. At 09:30, the world's largest truck, Terex Titan is seen using Sperry Vickers hydraulic steering, hauls iron ore. At 09:57, the Royal Doulton China factory in England uses Sperry grinding equipment. At 10:17, Sperry celebrates delivery of the 1000th Sperry AN/UYK-20 computer to the U.S. Navy. Sperry Flight Systems is a recognized leader in business aviation (variety of aircraft are shown) (10:40); At 10:50 a helicopter approaches an ocean landing platform; At 11:00, in France, train speeds through the French countryside; (11:00) an overhead view of a Sperry Univac 1100/40 mainframe room, with multiple CPUs; The French National Railway uses Sperry mainframes as part of traffic control; At 11:30 we see Sperry Uniservo tape drives and UNISCOPE terminals and Sperry traffic control systems. Scene of New Jersey Turnpike toll booths; Display board says ìNew Jersey Turnpike Traffic surveillance and Control Systemî designed by Sperry. (12:35) air traffic controller seen, with radar tracking scopes, commercial aircraft landing. Sperry ARTS-III (Automated Radar Terminal Systemî) used by air traffic controllers (13:01) plastic injection molding machine in use. At 13:30, a Sperry computer is being used in a medical EKG application. Medical technician monitors tape recording machine next to a patient being tested. Ship building in Holland automated by Sperry computers (14:00); plotting equipment and computer controlled metal cutting equipment is used; Sperry computer is connected remotely from Rotterdam; external view of an oil tanker (14:30) Sperry New Holland automated hay bail collection machine in use. END
