India's First Bauddha & Second Dalit CJI Justice BR Gavai
The story dates back to 1971, during the India-Pakistan war. Some soldiers were having a meal in a hut-like house in Amravati. A 10-year-old boy was helping his mother in the process. He had studied up to the 7th grade at a municipal Marathi school. His mother feared that he might go astray, but he was mature beyond his years. He cooked food, washed utensils, worked in the fields, and drew water from a borewell.
His childhood was spent in poverty, and even today, a photo of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar hangs on the wall of that small house. This is the story of the 52nd Chief Justice of India, Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai (BR Gavai) — an attendant-turned-judge who has been part of over 700 benches and has authored around 300 judgments. He is the second Dalit and the first Buddhist Chief Justice of India.
He began his legal career in 1985, served as a judge in several High Courts across the country, and later became a judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Gavai has delivered landmark judgments, including the cancellation of electoral bonds, upholding the demonetization decision, halting bulldozer actions, and maintaining the abrogation of Article 370.
