Trump's Cabinet Profiles: Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins #Trump #DougCollins
Doug Collins is the 58-year-old Georgian Secretary of Veterans Affairs - making him responsible for providing life-long support to US veterans.
Following two years in the Navy, Collins went to college and earned degrees in theology. He worked for about ten years as a pastor while owning a scrapbooking store with his wife.Following these ten years, he went back to law school in Atlanta and began working at a law firm.
In 2007, Collins began a career as a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives. Here, he legislated as a bog standard social conservative- he opposed abortion, supported the death penalty, and opposed green legislation that would hurt taxpayers.
In 2012, Collins successfully ran for the US House of Representatives where he won a closely contested Republican primary, before a landslide victory in the General. Collins won his seat again in ‘14, ‘16 and ‘18.
During his time in the House, Collins continued with his socially conservative stances. He also became a very close and ardent supporter of Donald Trump. He defended Trump during his first impeachment hearing and he would go on to support Trump in his 2020 election denialism.
In 2020, Collins ran for a vacant US Senate seat in a special election. However, he lost out to Republican Kelly Loeffler despite receiving an endorsement from Donald Trump. Loeffler, it should be said, was supported by Mitch McConnell - and she went on to lose to Democrat Raphael Warnock.
During the Biden presidency, Collins would work for Trump as legal counsel and he was an ardent campaigner for Trump during the 2024 presidential election.
After his election, Trump nominated Collins to be Secretary of Veterans Affairs. This was a somewhat non-controversial pick, as despite his very conservative positions, Collins was an experienced legislator and had served in the navy himself. He passed the senate with a 77 - 23 vote.
Collins is a traditional conservative Republican turned Trump and MAGA supporter. He will be on the right in Trump’s cabinet and will also be one of the most loyal cabinet members. And he has already shown clear support for some of Trump’s more controversial choices, by supporting DOGE cuts to his own department.
