Today I’m reacting to Lynyrd Skynyrd – That Smell for the first time.

This song was released in 1977 on the album Street Survivors and was written by Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zant. The song is actually a warning about the dangers of drug abuse and the reckless lifestyle that was surrounding the band at the time.

The lyrics tell a story about addiction and self-destruction, with Ronnie Van Zant warning people about the consequences of living too fast.

Tragically, just three days after the album was released, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane crashed, killing Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines.

“That Smell” has since become one of the band’s most powerful and haunting songs because of the message behind it.
