Prior to arriving at the Mexico 1968 Games, American sprinter Wyomia Tyus had become Olympic champion for the first time at the Tokyo Games four years earlier.

Although her position as the current Olympic champion - and record holder - made her one of the favourites to win the race, no woman had ever retained a 100 metres title in the Olympic Games up to that point.

With a new Olympic and world record of 11.0 seconds, Wyomia Tyus was once again the fastest woman alive, becoming the first woman ever to retain the 100m crown.
