Bat House Project / 600 Acres / 35 Four Chamber Bat Houses
We met up with Jim Kennedy on the location of a nature restoration project by a major corporation. This project covered 500 to 600 acres and as part of the project 35 Four Chamber Bat Houses were installed throughout the property. This video will walk you through some of the details of this large project.
This was a start to finish project with all the materials, equipment and bat houses arriving on a Monday and wrapping by Friday. Despite rain and unpredictable weather, the installation was completed on time. Sites were identified with the help of Bat Biologist Jim Kennedy, those sites were then cleared if needed and all underground utilities located. After the holes were dug using a hole digger, the 16 to 18 foot steel pipe was installed using concrete around the base. After those set overnight to let the concrete harden a boom lift was used to install the bat houses on the poles using a custom made bracket.
In this project, the 35 locations were chosen for their diversity and location throughout the property. Bat houses were installed in clusters of 2-3 facing in varying directions from E to S to allow each bat house to provide a slightly different roosting opportunity for bats at each location. This will help make sure a suitable roosting environment is available to the bats for a maximum period of time each season.
The project was more on an industrial scale for installing bat houses but your project doesn't have to be as big as this, even one bat house makes a difference. Build or Buy, please consider installing a bat house on your property.
