The first error I want to talk about is an error that can happen with any book, and that’s the multiple cover error. Usually it’s a double cover but I have seen as much as 8 covers on one book! Usually the more covers it has the rarer it is. CGC always notates the number of covers and it even grades all the different covers. So it will say something like first cover 9.8, second cover 9.9 etc. The overall grade for the book is the highest graded cover, which is really cool because usually the inner covers are higher grade and it’s not uncommon for them to be 9.9’s. So if you can find them raw at a good price there’s a chance that you could slab it and get a rare double cover AND a 9.9! I picked up this copy from Antihero gallery on IG, Venom 2 double cover. I’ll put a picture up here because I don’t want to handle this on camera, but it’s just an awesome double cover. Be sure to go check out antihero gallery on IG for some amazing raffles and live sales. Another notable recent double cover error is the venom 27 Jon Boy Meyers double cover. This one has the regular Jon Boy Meyers cover on the outside and the 1:100 stegman sketch cover on the inside. This is incredibly rare because I don’t know that we’ve ever seen a double cover with two different covers, I mean how does that even happen? Makes you wonder if it was intended. But the fact that it’s not only a double cover but an incentive sketch cover of a first appearance issue (1st appearance of Codex) makes this the collectors dream. Raw copies are leveling out at about $600 in high grade and graded 9.8’s are selling between 800 and 2000. There was a lot of hype about this when they first hit the market but it has cooled off since them which is usually how things go with comics. Still unknown how many copies there are, at least 60 have sold on ebay so far, and 45 on the CGC census so far, almost all in 9.8.

Next I have Amazing Spider-man 194. This error edition shows up on the direct edition only and is this little yellow bar on the normally all red Marvel Comics Group bar. It’s rumored that the printer saw this error early on and corrected it before too many copies were printed. I’ve been looking for this error for about a year now and I’d say it shows up about 1 in every 400-500 copies. Never have I seen it listed as “error edition” it’s always listed as the regular price for the comic which is a great opportunity to snag it cheap when you see it. This is the first graded copy I’ve found and some of the other examples I saw were incomplete versions. Almost nobody knows about this error.

Next up is a category of errors that all have one thing in common: foil missing from the cover. These can be incredibly valuable and are extremely easy to identify because they look totally off. You may get lucky and find these digging in long boxes but chances are they’ve already been identified and slabbed. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still consider buying them, just be careful you don’t get FOMO and pay too much. There’s also a recurring error with foil covers when the foil prints off register. Note that all foil misprintings like this get a green qualified label from CGC which I don’t agree with, the green label is always viewed as less desirable so they should just notate the error, not qualify the book.
