Ishi Woodcock Hunting - German Shepherd Bird Dog!!

The story of hunting with a shepherd -
I have used a shepherd for a hunting dog for 13 years now. My first shepherd was Gunner. I had never hunted with a dog before... but when he was a little over a year old I decided to bring him out on the trails with me. He learned quick and after a few trips was pretty good at sniffing out a grouse! Over the next couple years we became almost symbiotic in our hunting. A true bond, day after day spent with a good dog in the woods... Gunner learned to hunt rabbits, woodcock, partridge and turkey just as proficient as any breed made for the task. He would sit all day in a blind watching for geese (but was not a swimmer so.... we stuck with upland game) You could round a truck bed with the game I shot with that dog...Those years taught me a lot, he taught me a lot.

When he was 10 years old, he had no gray, the vet say he had the body of a 5 year old dog, then he was diagnosed with Degenerative Maleopathy....The first few months I brought him the woods as much as I could because I knew what was coming. Once the disease took hold and he lost control of his back legs I bought him a wheel chair. I would shoot rabbits/ birds and hide them on the trail before bringing him out so he could still have "hunts" ( I think he knew but he still got a big dog smile about it) When I finally lost him I was gone...more of me died that day than lived.

Nine months later I found myself watching a litter of shepherds, testing and observing to choose the right on. This dog would have a lot to live up to, I was going to make him into another great hunting shepherd and named him "Ishi". At 9 weeks old we went out for opening day of rabbit season. This was the first time I had set foot in the woods in almost 9 months. Ishi got his first 2 rabbits that day. I taught him everything I learned from hunting with Gunner all those years and he learned quick! Ishi was all I hoped he would be and now, a few years later he is an absolute machine on birds and rabbits!
