During the band’s tour supporting their just-released ninth album (aptly titled 9), bassist Rodrigo Palma and guitar geek Arun Bali took some time to hang with PG’s Perry Bean to go through their setups and demo the key sounds and filth they need to cover the band’s expansive setlist.
Rodrigo Palma’s main squeeze for Saves the Day (and other ventures) is this 1970s Fender P bass he bought in the mid-’90s. He hasn’t done any major surgery to it, but he recently had the neck joint addressed for a snugger fit and had a fret job to breathe fresh life into his No. 1. He goes with various brands of strings, but always locks into Eb tuning and rocks .50–.105 gauges.
Arun Bali has been the lead guitarist for Saves the Day since 2009 and his go-to on this run was a Fender American Vintage ’64 Telecaster that he’s heavily modded. The first upgrade was the anodized gold pickguard, and from there he added a Bigsby B5 in conjunction with the Mastery M4.1 bridge (for tuning stability), and lastly, he swapped out the stock American Vintage single-coils for Lindy Fralin Steel Pole 43 Tele pickups. All of his guitars use D’Addario NYXL .011–.052 strings and the Divine Noise Curly cables.
