Canada announced $1.5 billion in tariff relief to blunt the impact of U.S. metal tariffs. The package includes a new $1‑billion program under the Business Development Bank of Canada to support manufacturing and a $500‑million top‑up to the regional tariff response fund. The BDC program will offer three‑year, low‑interest loans of up to $50 million to the aluminum, steel and copper sectors, with repayment deferred until after the three‑year term. Officials said the measures will provide quick liquidity and help firms pivot to new export markets as Washington expanded tariffs on steel, aluminum and copper derivatives. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and Digital Innovation Minister Evan Solomon announced the plan at the Les Ateliers Beau‑Roc facility near Ottawa, stressing that Canada is on the front lines of a trade war and must protect workers. MPs cited uncertainty in Ontario’s manufacturing belt and discussed additional supports for forestry and other tariff‑hit sectors.
