LARGEST TORNADO IN HISTORY: Storm Chasers Barely Escape May 31st, 2013 El Reno, Oklahoma Tornado

On May 31st, 2013, the largest tornado in history descended just west of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The tornado took the lives of 8, including researchers Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras and Carl Young of TWISTEX. Chasers Jared Stevenson, Blaize Edwards, Warren Causey and Kelsey Wolff narrowly escaped with their lives as they were nearly overtaken by the core of the tornado. Their rooftop anemometer recorded a windspeed reading of 117MPH before it was ripped off the roof of their vehicle. The team encountered the outer circulation of the tornado as the core passed to their north by less than 300 yards.
