Since 2010, substantial progress has been made in artificial intelligence (AI) and its application to various aspects in Medicine. Taking GI and Hepatology as an example: AI is explored in gastroenterology for endoscopic analysis of lesions, in detection of cancer, and to facilitate the analysis of inflammatory lesions or gastrointestinal bleeding during wireless capsule endoscopy. AI is also tested to assess liver fibrosis and to differentiate patients with pancreatic cancer from those with pancreatitis. AI might also be used to establish prognoses of patients or predict their response to treatments, based on multiple factors. In medicine, this is beginning to have an impact at three levels: for clinicians, predominantly via rapid, accurate image interpretation; for health systems, by improving workflow and the potential for reducing medical errors; and for patients, by enabling them to process their own data to promote health. The current limitations, including bias, privacy and security, and lack of transparency, along with the future directions of these applications will need more work.
Over time, marked improvements in accuracy, productivity, and workflow will likely be actualized, but whether that will be used to translate into improving patient–doctor relationship or facilitate its erosion remains to be seen.
