In 1885, Niagara Reservation State Park became the first state park in the United States. Before the park was created, much of the land around Niagara Falls was controlled by private companies that charged visitors just to see the waterfalls.
The “Free Niagara” movement, supported by famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, helped protect the falls for public access and future generations. This historic decision became a major turning point in American conservation history.
