Episode 4: Podcast on Inside the X ray Machine

One : X-ray machine components: autotransformer → high-voltage transformer → rectifiers → X-ray tube. Filament transformer is separate. Control console manages kVp, mA, and exposure time.
Two — X-ray tube: evacuated glass/metal envelope. Cathode = filament + focusing cup. Anode = rotating tungsten disc.
Three — Thermionic emission: filament current heats filament → electron emission. Filament current controls mA, which controls X-ray quantity.
Four — Rotating anode distributes heat around the disc circumference during
exposure, preventing target melt. Rotates at 3,000–10,000 RPM.
Five — Line Focus Principle: angled target face creates a large actual focal spot (for heat distribution) that projects as a small effective focal spot (for image sharpness). Target angles typically 6°–17°.
Six — Heel Effect: beam intensity is higher on the cathode side, lower on the anode side. Position thicker anatomy toward the cathode side to compensate.
Seven — All advances in X-ray tube design ultimately solve the same problem: heat management.
