Prof. John Baez: Unsolved mysteries of fundamental physics
Slides: http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/mystery/mystery_web.pdf

Abstract
In this century, progress in fundamental physics has been slow. The Large Hadron Collider hasn't yet found any surprises, attempts to directly detect dark matter have been unsuccessful, string theory hasn't made any successful predictions, and nobody really knows what to do about any of this. But there is no shortage of problems, and clues. Here we list a few.

Speaker Information
John Baez is a mathematical physicist holding a Professorship in Mathematics at U. C. Riverside, and visiting Professorship at the Centre for Quantum Technologies in Singapore. He obtained his B.A. in Mathematics from Princeton and completed his PhD in MIT under Irving Segal. After a post-doctoral period at Yale, he took up his teaching position at U.C. Riverside, where he has been since. Professor Baez has conducted pioneering work in quantum gravity and, more recently, in network and information theory. He is creator of the blog Azimuth and initiator of the Azimuth Project, an international collaborative effort between scientists and engineers to tackle environmental and technological challenges; he is co-founder of n-Category Café, a group blog with expository on math, physics and philosophy using techniques from category theory and higher category theory; and recently co-creator of the journal ‘Compositionality’, an open-access journal for research using compositional ideas in any discipline.
