Day 9 of Our 4500 KM Toronto to Gaspé Road Trip – Scenic Route 198, Murdochville, and Ferry

Day 9 of our Toronto to Gaspé journey was all about slow roads, small towns, and a big ferry ride. We left Gaspé and took the winding Route 198 inland toward Murdochville, a quiet former mining town surrounded by snowy forests and frozen rivers.

The views along this route were totally different — less coastal, more mountainous, with untouched stretches of wilderness. We made scenic stops at Saint-Maxime-du-Mont-Louis and the peaceful Lac de l’Anse-Pleureuse — both hidden gems right off the road.

Next, we cruised down the coast to La Martre Lighthouse, a bright red wooden beacon standing tall against the icy shoreline — one of the most photogenic stops so far.

In the evening, we reached Matane and boarded a 3-hour ferry across the St. Lawrence River to Baie-Comeau. Watching the shoreline disappear behind us as the sun went down was surreal.

We ended the night with a quiet stay in Ragueneau, just outside Baie-Comeau.

Total drive so far: ~2687 km
Today’s drive: ~287 km + 3 hr ferry
Ferry cost: ~$100
Day cost: ~$120
Vibe: Mountain roads, frozen lakes, and a ferry ride into a whole new part of Quebec.
