2014 Porsche Cayman
Price: $58,688
275hp 213 ft lbs
0-60mph 5.3s
2.7 L flat 6 cylinder
2910lbs
After having such an amazing experience driving the Boxster S, getting behind the wheel of the new Cayman was a necessity. With gorgeous styling that in my opinion trumps the 911, a coveted mid-engined layout, and a real roof, the Cayman gets me excited just thinking about it.
Cayman is like a portable amusement park. It’s so unbelievably fun to drive. The steering, suspension and drivetrain work together in such perfect harmony, it’s hard to imagine anything better. In fact if I drove the 918 spider I’d probably die instantly from sensory overload. But maybe not so Porsche I’d love to get my hands on one.
The Boxster and Cayman are probably the two most confidence inspiring automobiles I’ve ever driven. Shooting from apex to apex, every foot of tarmac you garble up begs you to go a little bit faster. And you can. You also have a comforting sense that you won’t spin like a top when you push it too hard. The same cannot be said for its bigger brother the 911. The Cayman is so easy to place on the road, and so intuitive, its no longer man and machine, but a symbiotic relationship. After getting out of the car, I accidentally referred to myself as Cayman.
The optional sports exhaust isn’t equipped on this car. After experiencing it compared to the basic system, the word optional should be replaced by mandatory purchase. At $2890 it’s not a bargain, but the flurry of wonderful notes it emits are worth every penny.
The Cayman weighs just 2910lbs thanks to its 44% aluminum body. While its curb weight is identical to the boxster it has two times the torsional rigidity. In theory then handling should be better in the Cayman, but both are so brilliant it’s practically impossible to say.
I’m in love with the Cayman. It’s incredible in every regard, but most importantly it had me smiling the entire day, both in and out of the car. I think, i’ve just experienced a piece of automotive heaven.
