May 5th, 2012. Undefeated 21 year old Saul Alvarez aka “Canelo” takes on “Sugar” Shane Mosley in the 4th defense of his WBC World Super Welterweight Championship. At this juncture, the 40 year old 6-1 betting underdog Mosley was well past his prime with a record of 2(2)-2-1 in his last 5 bouts and had been inactive for over a year.

This was part of the undercard in the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Miguel Cotto main event for the WBA Super World Super Welterweight Title.

Prefight records; Alvarez 39(29)-0-1, Mosley 46(39)-7-1.

Going into the fight, the betting favorite Canelo had defeated top oppositions such as Lovemore Ndou, Kermit Cintron & Carlos Baldomir while veteran Shane had garnered notable wins over the likes of Jesse James Leija, John John Molina, Antonio Diaz, Golden Johnson, Phillip Holiday, Wilfredo Rivera, Luis Collazo, Ricardo Mayorga, Antonio Margarito, Fernando Vargas (2x) & Oscar De La Hoya (2x) in his near 20 year career.

Note: His 2nd win over De La Hoya was a highly disputed decision where most believe he had lost.

Overall, the weathered Mosley displayed tremendous determination but was thoroughly overwhelmed by Alvarez who ripped him with fusillades of punches upstairs and downstairs in a one sided affair. Shane to his credit, managed to connect with a few decent right hands but was unable to put a dent on the champion.

After 12 rounds, Alvarez won a lopsided UD12 with scores of 118-110 & 119-109 (2x) to retain his WBC World Super Welterweight Championship and his unblemished record.

Although dominated, Sugar Shane showed tremendous courage despite a losing effort against the champion who is nearly 20 years younger in addition to being the naturally bigger and stronger man.

In the main event, Mayweather emerged victorious via a hard fought UD12 to lift the WBA Super World Super Welterweight Title from Cotto. According to Floyd in a 2016 interview, Miguel Cotto was the most difficult opponent that he had ever faced in his career that spanned across 3 different decades.

On November 6th 2021, Canelo Alvarez will defend his WBA (Super), WBC, WBO and The Ring Super Middleweight Titles against unbeaten IBF Super Middleweight Champion Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant in a unification fight to crown the Undisputed World Super Middleweight Champion where the winner will be the first to hold all 5 major world titles in the history of the division.

We all know Alvarez’s last (and only to date) career setback took place in September 2013 against defensive master Floyd Mayweather where he lost a UD12 and relieved of his WBC & The Ring Magazine Super Welterweight Titles, so will the slick Tennessean be the first to hand the Mexican Superstar his first defeat in 8 years?
