Pay attention to your body's master clock | Emily Manoogian | TEDxSanDiegoSalon

Almost every cell in our body has a molecular clock, and those clocks are coordinated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) which serves as the body's master clock and helps regulate our lives in a 24-hour pattern commonly known as Circadian Rhythm.

When we pay attention to this cycle, and regulate our activities accordingly, all is well. But when we shift our eating, drinking, and sleeping patterns outside of this natural rhythm, circadian disruption may occur. This can lead to serious health issues. But with simple, non-invasive lifestyle changes, we can support our biological clocks to optimize performance, prevent and treat disease, and delay the onset of age-related illnesses. Emily Manoogian, Ph.D. is a researcher at the Salk Institute who studies the intricate interaction between our body’s biological rhythms and the timing of our daily habits. These internal rhythms interact with our daily behaviors of when and how much we sleep, eat, and exercise. As the head of human research in Dr. Satchin Panda’s lab at Salk, Emily monitors the timing of these behaviors in thousands of people around the world to gain insight on how they relate to health. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
