"The Tractatus de Hereticis et Sortilegiis" by Dark Ages is quite a fun album. To best describe the sound, imagine the following scenario: It’s the second half of the 14th century, people are dying due to the plague all around you, and in desperate hope to spare yourself from the horrid disease, you take refuge in an old church, outside which mass graves are dug for the deceased, and the father leads the sorrowful chants.

I know, that probably sounded really cheesy and stupid, I’m not that good a writer, I know, but nonetheless, that would be how I’d describe the sound of this album.

This album is completely ambient, and is very atmosphere driven. The most used instrument is the church organ (figures), playing eerie, simple, yet very intriguing melodies, that really captures the atmosphere of the sorh and misery of medieval Europe during times of plague. I really could imagine this music being played to a horror movie, in which we see some ancient catholic ritual in dark and secretive catacombs. (I’m sorry for using such cheesy comparisons, but they really are the best way I could describe the music).

Each track usually contains of a two three melodies repeated quite a few times, but here, unlike most ambient albums, the repetition really does work as intended.

Additionally, there are times where there’s a sort of choir chant, in latin, which really adds to the atmosphere. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find any lyrics.

That’s all I’m able to say, really, for this unique and strange album. The melodies and concepts are so very simple, yet so very efficient."
