Air india Boeing-777 landing
Landing an Air India Boeing 777 involves a complex process managed by a two-pilot flight crew, guided by ATC instructions, and executed through a series of automated and manual steps, including configuring the aircraft with flaps and gear, managing descent, and flaring before touchdown. Pilots use the autopilot during the approach, but manually take control for the final moments on the runway, using thrust reversers and other systems to slow the aircraft after it lands.

Pre-landing procedures

Descent and approach:

The flight crew begins their descent according to Air Traffic Control (ATC) instructions, with the autopilot managing the initial approach phase.

Aircraft configuration:

As the aircraft gets closer, the pilots will extend the flaps and the landing gear to the required settings for landing. This increases drag and provides lift at lower speeds.

Instrument landing system (ILS):

The pilots will use the ILS to receive guidance signals from the airport's runway, ensuring they are on the correct vertical and horizontal path.

Monitoring systems:

The flight crew will continuously monitor the aircraft's systems, including engine performance, flight control surfaces, and fuel levels, as well as checking for any unexpected events like turbulence.

Final approach and landing

Autoland or manual control:

The Boeing 777 is equipped with an autoland system, which can perform a fully automatic landing in certain conditions. However, the pilots will typically take manual control for the final approach and flare, especially in non-standard conditions like heavy rain or strong winds, to ensure a smooth landing.

Flare:

Just before touchdown, the pilot will "flare" the aircraft, raising the nose slightly to slow the descent rate and bring the main landing gear to the runway.

Touchdown:

The main landing gear touches the runway first, followed by the nose wheel.

Reverse thrust and braking:

The pilots then apply full reverse thrust from the engines to help slow the aircraft down quickly, followed by the application of wheel brakes.

Disengaging systems:

Once the aircraft is under control and has slowed to a safe taxi speed, the pilots will disengage the reverse thrust and prepare to taxi to the gate, following ATC instructions.
