Im Abendrot: Vier letzte Lieder: from Four Last Songs: R Strauss

Surely this version by Libor Pešek and Magdaléna Hajóssyová must rank amongst the most beautiful and most sensitive interpretations. It was a treasured gift to us from Libor in 1987 during his time as chief conductor of the RLPO in Liverpool.
"Strauss´s swan song is filled with an emotional, musically sincere and tender atmosphere of meditation and parting, but it is far from anguish or resignation. It is , rather , a sorrowful sigh over past life and experiences , without trace of pain or bitterness"

We made through strife and wonder
Our journey hand in hand;
From wandering let us rest now
In this peaceful land.

Round us the valleys falling,
The sky withdrawing light;
Two larks alone are calling,
And dreaming from the height.

Stand here and watch them flutter;
Soon will be time to sleep --
So may we never falter
Alone in this great deep.

O wider, still more peaceful!
So deep on evening’s breath.
How we are tired from roaming! --
Can this even be death?
