"Did King Noah Preserve a Sacred Historical Record?"

“Zeniff’s record covers seventy-eight years of history, flashing back to about 200 B.C. to the beginning of the migration and the resettlement of Lehi-Nephi. The first part ([Mosiah] chaps. 9-10) is written by Zeniff in first person, after which Mormon apparently takes over as narrator. A puzzle remains as to who kept the record following Zeniff’s death since his son and successor, Noah, is said to have been unrighteous.”

Vogel’s observation highlights a narrative and recordkeeping problem within the Book of Mormon’s account of the Zeniff colony.

The difficulty is not that records continued, but that the text never clearly identifies the custodian who preserved and transmitted them through this period.

Thus, an important link in the documentary chain remains unexplained, leaving uncertainty about authorship, preservation, and historical continuity.

Record custody after Zeniff remains unexplained in narrative.
