Winter in the Woods
We give up. We surrender. The snow wins. We're making snickerdoodles.
In real time it is still snowing but the doors are in process again and I still think they'll be up by tomorrow.
Enjoy!

We didn't really take much video of making snickerdoodles, but here's the recipe anyway. :)
1/2 cup butter -- softened
1 cup sugar
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 and 1/2 cups flour
2 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
Mash butter together with sugar, baking soda and cream of tartar. Add egg and vanilla and stir that in. Add flour gradually, stirring it in as you go. If you want, at this point, you can put it in the fridge for a while, but we don't. :)
Combine two tablespoons sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Shape dough into balls and roll them in the sugar/cinnamon mixture. (Nick has the kids shake them in a tupperware with a tightly closed lid.) Place on cookie sheet. Bake 10 minutes in a 375 degree oven or until edges begin to brown.
Enjoy!

About the Fouch Family: We are Nick and Esther, and our three kids Milo, Stella, and Sadie. We have lived off the grid -- in the sense of not connected to the power grid -- for four years on three acres of wooded land in Southwestern Idaho. Nick is a finish carpenter working on building his own business. Esther is a writer, the author of a recent memoir called "What Falls From the Sky," and a daughter of the homesteading teacher and activist Carla Emery, who wrote "The Encyclopedia of Country Living." Nick and Esther were both raised in Idaho, near where we live now, but we've also lived in Massachusetts, Utah, and California. Our kids are ages 10, 8 and 5.
