Overnight, AI coding got expensive. On June 1, GitHub Copilot dropped flat-rate pricing and started charging by the token — heavy users watched $29/month turn into $750, and some hit $3,000. Then on June 15, Anthropic split Claude: run agents on autopilot and they bill at full API rates. Google capped its plans; Cursor is next. "Unlimited AI for $20" is officially dead.

But here's the no-hype catch: AI agents burn 10–100× more tokens than chat, so that flat $20 was always a venture-funded loss leader. The meter was always coming — now you can see it.
