A New Theory of Change For Post-Traumatic Growth
Many successful people have traumatic backgrounds to their lives, but have somehow come through stronger. Whether you feel that is true for yourself or not, this video is important as a way to understand how best to help yourself, or to help someone you love or work with who has somehow been traumatised. People become brittle as a result of trauma. Post-traumatic growth helps to lower those prickly boundaries and responsively build a future standing firmly on one's named personal values.
This video is pitched for care professionals and support workers, but will also help anyone interested to move their own life on more constructively.
30-70% of people experiencing traumatising events can come through stronger, rather than getting stuck in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This better path is called, Post-traumatic Growth (PTG) [Ref.]. Since 2003, the Emotional Logic Centre (elcentre.org) has been teaching people how to accelerate their post-traumatic growth, so the method is well tested. It has gone international with Emotional Logic Coaches on all five continents, and there is a strong schools preventive programme. The Founder of Emotional Logic was a doctor who himself came from a traumatising family upbringing, so the method is truly self-help and self-empowering.
It works by guiding people to name their personal values in a unique way that harnesses their emotional energy into constructive action plans, activated when these values are being challenged by life's situations. The method guides people to go beyond just talking out their feelings and having self-critical opinions about behaviour. It goes beyond learning only to down-regulate their emotional behaviour. Instead, new insights empower people 'on the spot' to make values-based action plans that harness their unpleasant emotional energy reasonably into their achievements... surprisingly through knowing how to make more responsive, adaptable and honest relationships.
The science behind this teaching is called Emotional Chaos Theory, and Adaptive Systems Learning. Emotional Logic tools map a way forward to turn chaos into clarity. This mapping process has revealed a new predictive cause of common mental illnesses and socially disruptive behaviour, called 'whirlpools of loss emotion chemistry'. Kinaesthetically made maps of emotions and values identify uniquely person-centred paths that turn turbulent emotion reasonably into focused movement, by an improved power of choice gained through this new quality of insight. Accumulated hidden loss reactions that could otherwise get trapped as whirlpools of inner chemistry (producing stress reactions with tension, distress, or confusion), instead transform and liberate life in values-based ways. The energy returns to explore the future with realistic hopes, and an inbuilt adaptability that reduces fear when facing the unpredictable.
