America's Oldest Ally

America's Oldest Ally

For a superpower with global interests, like the United States, allies are particularly indispensable, given Washington’s need to project power globally. No U.S. ally is perfect, But one centuries-old alliance that has stood the test of time is one that many would never guess.

The answer to the question of who is America’s oldest ally lies at the far western end of North Africa. Just one year after the Declaration of Independence, the first ruler in the world to formally recognize the United States as an independent nation was Sultan Mohammad III of the Sultanate of Morocco in 1777.

For most Americans, Morocco is simply a tourist destination, a touch of Africa and the Middle East amid five-star resorts and an exquisite array of spices. Yet as far as special relationships go, it is so much more.

The Moroccan-American partnership has stood the test of time. The centuries-old treaty has withstood transatlantic stresses for more than 240 years, making it the longest unbroken treaty relationship in United States history.
